Diehards

Look up diehard in the dictionary and find related words like bullethead, fanatic, old school, pighead, stick in the mud, etc. A diehard is the one who stubbornly adheres to traditional and outdated views.

Looking around, only the diehards have been keeping the sport alive. I received a text from my friend Bigalow the other day. He wanted to know if I was going to Seminole Tribe MX on Sunday. Whoops! I totally forgot about the annual Pro Am race. He wrote back: “Wow. Everyone is falling apart. Between you and the rest of Florida, we aren’t going to have a sport anymore.”

I started thinking. Well, I do consider myself a diehard, but times are tough, and these days, I can’t help feeling a little out of the loop, so I logged onto DZP after the race, and I must have been the only one missing because the turnout was huge! South Florida motocross is strong!

Bigalow came back with this: “I felt awesome and rode really good. Third in the A class. I’m pretty pumped. Moto hard ’til the finish. Me and Couture every moto.”

Indeed, it sounds like I missed out. What’s sort of ironic is how Tom Self showed up on Sunday at the Daniel Boone MX track in Kentucky to speak about the current lead ban and what this could mean for the future of our sport.

“If we don’t buck up and get serious about this thing, we are all going to be playing Mumbly Peg and chess in a year,” Self said. “It’s that simple. It’s your choice. In motocross there’s a saying, ‘You’ve got two choices. You can go big or go home.’ Kids you want to go big, or do you want to go home?”

Well, I have no idea how to play chess and I’ve never even heard of Mumbly Peg, until I looked it up. Knife throwing?

It’s time to get off of the couch. STMX hosts a Loretta Lynn Qualifier on April 4th and 5th. Are you a diehard?
