I learned, laying audio under the video I captured of Garrett for the September feature in FTR Magazine, that I offered too much verbal encouragement when doing this interview, which distracted from my subject and added extra work for me in the editing process. I had not noticed until sitting down to cut up the footage. I offered no downtime after his answers, leaving little silence or reflection time. I said, “Yeah,” or “Mmmhmm,” after his points, often interjecting, despite knowing one of a reporter’s greatest interview secrets is to leave the silence be – that’s when the talking really starts. Listening to the tape played back, I brought more attention to myself with each utterance…D’oh!
