Social capital

Inspired by this interview with Matt Damon and my conversations with a student filmmaker about directors and being in a position of influence making an impact:

“The director is in charge of every single decision. I mean, it’s a dictatorship, it’s a benevolent dictatorship. but it’s true. It’s every single shot. There’s nothing arbitrary.” – Matt Damon

On being a director and having control:

“Early on, Ben Affleck and I, nobody would hire us. It was about control in a sense that we were like so many young people in L.A. who are trying to break in as actors. It’s very frustrating, not just because you’re getting rejected constantly, but also because you’re at a time in your life where you have en enormous amount of creative energy but there’s no way to express it and that’s why a lot of people get into drinking or drugs…Ben and I talked about trying to channel it somewhere and the script was a good way to do that it because it kept us focused and it captured that creative energy, which would have just otherwise been frittered away some other way.”Ā – Matt Damon
